Are you new to the idea of public speaking? If so, you can learn this vital skill. This article is filled with suggestions with you in mind. Learning how to speak in public will greatly benefit you. Take notes and refer back to them as needed. Eventually, you will have increased confidence.

Love your topic. To help you be able to talk confidently when speaking in front of others, choose a topic that you know a lot about. Include tidbits of information that is not commonly known to keep your audience engaged. Finally, speak in a conversational tone to help you remain calm and composed.

Use a timer when you practice so you can verify the length of your speech. This can help you edit it and retrain its length. If its too short, try finding more information to add to it. Also remember, you never want to rush through your speech; remember to pace yourself.

Once your speech is memorized, practice it over and over again. This will allow you time to tweak the speech if needed. Also, practice your breathing and pace. Prepare your speech to include pauses in case of interruptions, which hopefully are filled with applause. If you can, try to practice using the podium and other equipment youll be using when you make the real speech.

Do not use a laser pointer to run over words as you read them from a screen. This gives your audience the idea that you think they are incapable of reading for themselves. Once they begin to feel insulted, it will be much harder for you to convince them to listen to you.

One key to a successful speech is to make it an appropriate length. Basically, when a speech is too short, you may not be giving all the information the audience is looking for. On the other hand, if your speech is too long, your audience may become bored and you may lose their attention.

Take the time to research other important speeches. The internet has a wealth of recorded speeches so that you can observe how they do it. Focus on the qualities that you liked in their speech and emulate them. Look for qualities such as their ease in speaking, their humor and how they capture the attention of the audience.

Do not chew gum or eat when you are making a speech. The chewing is unprofessional and distracts your audience. It is permissible to sip from a glass of water occasionally so that your throat does not get dry. Keep that to a minimum too, as it serves as a distraction from your message.

Visit your hairdresser on the day of your speech. Nothing gives you more confidence than looking and feeling great. Purchase a new suit which makes you feel good to bolster your confidence levels. Audience members will take note of you when you are dressed for success and exude a sense of confidence.

Exercise

If you are nervous about speaking to a group, consider a visualization exercise that can help you significantly. Instead of looking out at your audience as people to impress, imagine that they are sitting there in this underwear. It is impossible to be intimidated by people dressed in such a way, so you will be calmer to speak.

Now that you have learned the secrets of great public speakers, you can begin to practice this skill on your own. You will learn how to be more at ease and deliver your message with confidence. Come back here whenever you need to so that you can refresh your skills.
